Obverse
The obverse side of the 2012 ATB El Yunque 5 oz Silver Coin includes the portrait of President George Washington. The first president of the United States has featured on the US quarter since 1932 when Congress authorized his effigy for the coin to mark the 200th anniversary of his birthday. The portrait was designed by John Flanagan.
Reverse
On the reverse face of 2012 ATB El Yunque 5 oz Silver Coins, you will find a Puerto Rican parrot and a coqui tree frog on the branch of a tree in El Yunque National Forest. The forest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and it receives up to 20 feet of rainfall a year supporting its lush, tropical environment.
History
El Yunque is one of the oldest preserves in the Western Hemisphere. The United States government first created the nature preserve in 1903 during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt shortly after the US took control of the island from Spain following the Spanish-American War. However, King Alfonso XII of Spain had previously set it aside as protected land in 1876 when it was a Spanish colony.
