{{/presale}}Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico hosts one of the most famous pre-Columbian archaeological sites in the world. Unique in their architecture and their monumental scale, the palatial great houses and pit structures of the Chaco culture date between the 9th and 13th centuries, a ceremonial and political center linked by an elaborate road network and preserved today as part of the Chaco Culture National Historical Park and its associated protection sites. This remarkable achievement of Native American prehistory is commemorated by the U.S. Mint’s 2012 ATB Chaco Culture 5 oz Silver Coin.
Highlights:
History
The U.S. Mint started its America the Beautiful series of commemorative quarters in 2010, celebrating iconic American landmarks and cultural sites in annual limited releases. The 2012 ATB Chaco Culture 5 oz Coin was issued in April of that year and is among the most highly prized collectors’ items in the series, bearing gorgeous details sculpted by the award-winning medallic artist Phebe Hemphill. It celebrates a unique center of pre-Columbian civilization that remains a major draw for scholars, archaeologists, artists, and tourists.
Shipping
These coins are certified Mint State 69 and arrive in protective plastic slabs. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be found outside the primary focal points of the coin.
Obverse
The obverse side is inscribed with a portrait of George Washington consistent with the image that appears on the widely issued George Washington quarter. It also bears the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “Quarter Dollar.”
Reverse
The reverse side carries the inscriptions “Chaco Culture,” “2012,” “New Mexico,” and “E Pluribus Unum.” At its heart is a portrait of the striking Chacoan landscape and its distinctive architecture, remarkable in its evocative detail.
