If you are looking for a tangible piece of American history, look no further than American Eagle Gold Coins. Each coin is made from 22-karat gold with small amounts of alloy to make the coins harder and more likely to resist scratches.

Obverse

Each 2012 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin features the image of Lady Liberty. The imagery was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 to be used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins that were minted from 1907 to 1933. In the image, Lady Liberty is shown in front of the Capitol as she strides forward with the sun at her back. Her left hand carries an olive branch, while her right holds a flaming torch. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty and the year of mint 2012.

Reverse

On the reverse, you will see a family of bald eagles as designed by sculptor Miley Busiek. The image was created especially for these coins back in 1986. In the image, a male bald eagle comes to land at his nest with an olive branch clutched in his talons, while a female and hatchlings wait in the nest.

History

In 1986, the United States Mint launched the American Eagle Coin program. At launch, there were just gold and silver bullion options. Today, the coins are available in four different metal types: gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. There are also proof and bullion versions available for the coins. The gold coins also come in fractional weight sizes that are great for those wanting gold on a budget. The designs differ based on the metal type of the coin, though they all have the same themes.
