{{/presale}}Now in their seventh year, the American Buffalo Gold coins are the first .9999 pure gold coins produced by the US Mint. They are offered in only the 1 ounce size. Both the Bullion and Proof coins are struck at the West Point Mint, however, only the Proof coin carries the W mint mark. Provident Metals has the 2012 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold coin available for purchase right now.
Highlights:
The 24 karat gold American Buffalo Gold coins, struck in .9999 pure gold (the maximum purity possible), provide investors with a high level of liquidity, portability, and financial security.
Obverse
The obverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin spotlights a right-facing profile of a Native American Chief. Created by American sculptor James Earle Fraser, he said the profile is a composite of the profiles of 3 different Indian Chiefs who had allowed him to sketch them. The 3 Indian Chiefs Fraser sketched were Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. This Buffalo Gold obverse had originally appeared as the Buffalo Nickels obverse, and is known by collectors as Frasers 1913, Type I design. It is considered to be among the best designs of any US coin. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2012.
Reverse
The reverse of the American Buffalo Gold coin spotlights a left-facing profile of an American Buffalo. This design was also created by American sculptor James Earle Fraser and is believed to be based upon the massive buffalo of the Central Park Zoo, Black Diamond. This Buffalo Gold reverse also originally appeared as the Buffalo Nickels reverse, and like its obverse design counterpart, was chosen for the Buffalo Gold due to it being among the best designs of any US coin. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and $50.
History
These obverse and reverse designs created by American sculptor James Earle Fraser originally appeared on the Buffalo Nickel, which was struck by the US Mint from 1913 to 1938. When Public Law 109-145 was written (also known as the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005), Title II of the law led to the production of the $50 American Buffalo Gold bullion and proof coins. It stipulated that Frasers obverse and reverse designs from the Buffalo Nickel be used on the Buffalo Gold coins. More importantly, however, is that this marked the first time in history that the US Mint produced a 24 karat gold coin. Since most investors were favoring .9999 pure gold coins, these 24 karat gold American Buffalo Gold coins allowed the US Mint to keep pace with the 24 karat gold offerings of other countries, such as Canada and China.
