{{/presale}}The First Spouse Gold Coin program was a popular series issued by the U.S. Mint between 2007 and 2016, celebrating iconic Presidential spouses from the days of Martha Washington down to Barbara Bush in the early 1990s. One of the most beloved such figures in her day was Lucy Hayes, the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, known for her profound moral convictions and strong intellect, her charm and her compassion. An advocate of temperance who was nevertheless a popular hostess, she left her mark on White House tradition with the very first Easter Egg Roll in 1878, an event in which hundreds of children participated. It’s represented on the 2011-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Lucy Hayes 1/2 oz Gold Coin, now available from Provident Metals.

Reverse

History
Congress passed the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act in 2005, directing the United States Mint to create a coin series commemorating American Presidents. The same Act authorized the creation of the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, a parallel series that like the Presidential dollar coins would be minted between 2007 and 2016. The coin celebrating Lucy Hayes — of the most beloved of First Ladies, known as “Mother Lucy” for the support she provided her husband’s troops during the Civil War — features designs by Susan Gamble and fine artist and illustrator Barbara Fox, as well as sculpting by Don Everhart and the famous medallic artist Joseph Menna, who today holds the position of Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
