The Platinum Platypus Series was introduced in 2011 by the Perth Mint to celebrate the distinct wildlife of Australia. The series began with the release of the 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin and continued through 2018. Today, 2011 Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coins are available at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with protective plastic!
  • First year of issue in the Platinum Platypus Series!
  • Mintage capped at 30,000 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Assigned a $100 (AUD) face value backed by the Australian government.
  • The obverse displays a bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse showcases a platypus underwater.

Each 2011 Australian Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coin is secured in protective plastic. The Platinum Platypus Series debuted with this 2011 coin, which had a maximum mintage of 30,000. This remains the highest mintage in the series, as later releases from 2013 to 2018 were produced without a mintage limit but failed to reach the same level of demand.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2011 Australian Platypus Platinum Coin features a detailed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, this image shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This effigy has appeared on Commonwealth coins since 1998. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2011 Platypus 1 oz Platinum Coin is the image of a platypus swimming underwater. This design captures the platypus in its natural river habitat, where it relies on clean water and stable banks for feeding and shelter. Inscriptions here include AUSTRALIAN PLATYPUS, 2011, and 1 OZ 9995 PLATINUM.

History

The platypus is a one-of-a-kind mammal native to Australia, best known for its unusual appearance and biological features. Males of the species have venomous spurs on their hind legs, which they use to defend their territory during the breeding season. While their venom is not fatal to humans, it is capable of causing severe pain and swelling.
