Obverse

The obverse of the 2010-W US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty Gold Coin showcases Christian Gobrechts iconic portrayal of Lady Liberty, a design cherished from 1838 to 1907 on the US Eagle gold coin. Inscriptions include 2010, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 15TH PRESIDENCY, and 1857-1861.

Reverse

Flip the 2010-W First Spouse Buchanans Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coin, and the reverse reveals a seated James Buchanan at a desk, commemorating his presidency from 1857 to 1861 as the 15th President of the United States. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., W, and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Buchanan’s administration had to deal with the Utah War (1857-1858), a conflict between the U.S. government and the Mormon settlers in the Utah Territory led by Brigham Young. The dispute arose from tensions over governance, and Buchanan ultimately appointed a new governor, diffusing the immediate crisis but leaving a lasting impact on relations between the federal government and the Mormon community.
