{{/presale}}Proof-quality coins are created by a minting process that uses specially-treated metals and hand-polished dies, with each piece struck multiple times. The result is a cameo effect with glamorous shine, mirrored backgrounds and frosted raised elements, the kind of coin whose visual appeal makes for an excellent addition to any collection and an attractive way to invest in gold. The team at Provident Metals is happy to offer this kind of coin from the U.S. Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin Program, the fifteenth issue in a series devoted to the spouses of American Presidents, or in the case of bachelors such as James Buchanan to a symbolic “spouse” in Lady Liberty. The 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coin is available for online purchase.
Highlights:
The 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin ships in an attractive wooden case along with a Certificate of Authenticity, with each shipment fully insured by Provident Metals. It features the design work of noted artist Joseph Menna, who today holds the post of Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint.
Obverse
Lady Liberty appears on the obverse field in a design inspired by the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, which was in circulation during James Buchanan’s Presidency. This is accompanied by thirteen decorative stars and the “W” mint mark of the West Point Mint, along with inscriptions for the years of Buchanan’s Presidency and the lettering “2010,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “15TH PRESIDENCY.”
Reverse
James Buchanan appears on the reverse field as a young man working at the Pennsylvania legal firm that preceded his political career. He is accompanied by the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and inscriptions confirming the coin’s country of issue, face value and purity.
History
James Buchanan was the immediate predecessor of Abraham Lincoln, serving as President between the years 1857 and 1861 after a lengthy political career in the House of Representatives and the Senate and noted work as a diplomat. His appearance in the First Spouse Gold Coin program — which the U.S. Mint issued between 2007 and 2010 and was largely dedicated to celebrating Presidential spouses — is owed the program’s convention of representing Lady Liberty as a symbolic “spouse” of unmarried Presidents. Each representation of Lady Liberty draws from designs on coins that were extant during the applicable Presidency.
