The African bush elephant is the largest land mammal in the world and is one of three elephant species still alive in the world. The others include the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant.

History

The African Wildlife Series Elephant coins debuted in 1999 as the Zambia Elephant Series. The coins were issued in 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver for Zambia from 1999 to 2003, and each year featured a new reverse design of the African bush elephant. This tradition has continued since 2004 when the Bavarian State Mint switched the series to Somalia.
