Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins were introduced in 1983. The first coin was the 1 oz silver coin that was available alone from 1983 to 1991. In 1992, four fractional-ounce coins were introduced and have been available since then. In 1996, 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins were added to the series.
Obverse
Winged Victory features on the obverse side of the 2009 Proof Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coins. This vision of Victory is based on the goddess Victoria and is a symbol of victory that has been held in high regard in Mexico since the nation gained independence from Spain. Inscriptions include “2 Onzas Plata Pura,” “2009 Ley 999,” and “OM,” the mint mark of the Mexican Mint.
Reverse
Mexico’s coat of arms is featured in 11 different versions on the reverse of the 2009 Proof Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin. The national seal features the Mexican golden eagle combating a serpent on a cactus perch. Inscriptions read “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.” The design field includes 10 historic versions of the seal around the central coat of arms and a wreath of laurel and cactus below.
History
Proof Mexican Libertad Silver Coins have low mintage figures. The 2009 issue of the Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin actually had the highest in the history of the series at 6,200 coins, some 1,200 coins higher than the next closest coin.
The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors. It is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere and was once the central coining operation of the Spanish Empire, producing coins for colonies throughout Central America, South America, and the Spanish colonies of the Pacific Ocean.
