Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse field of the 2009 5 Pound Great Britain Olympic Countdown Gold Coin. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in the ever-popular Ian Rank-Broadley design. Created in 1998, the image features the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Reverse

One of the most popular sporting categories of the Summer Olympics involves swimming and diving contests. These are some of the most heated contests and for the first release in the Olympic Countdown Series, the Royal Mint pits two swimmers against each other in the reverse design of the 2009 5 Pound Great Britain Olympic Countdown Gold Coin. In the center of the design field is a number 3 in a style similar to that of a digital clock. It marks the start of the countdown in the gold series to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

History

This brief proof gold coin series from the Royal Mint featured a fresh image of Olympic athletes competing in different sports for each design release, along with a number marking the years remaining until the games came to town.
