{{/presale}}In 2006, the United States Mint proudly launched the American Gold Buffalo, a remarkable 24-karat gold coin. This groundbreaking series embraced the iconic obverse and reverse motifs that were initially employed on the Buffalo Nickel back in 1913, lending a sense of historical continuity to this exquisite collection. Today, you have the opportunity to get 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin Sets online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The American bison, also known as the American buffalo, once roamed in vast herds across the North American continent. Estimates suggest that before the arrival of Europeans, the bison population numbered in the tens of millions. These herds played a vital role in the ecosystem and were a significant resource for Native American tribes, providing food, clothing, shelter, and other materials necessary for their way of life.
Obverse
The 2008-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coins boast an obverse design that showcases James Earle Fraser’s artistic prowess in depicting a resolute indigenous persona. Through a remarkable right-profile relief, Fraser ingeniously amalgamates the notable facial features of three influential tribal leaders from the early 20th century, offering a captivating tribute to their legacy. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, 2008, the W mint mark, and the F initial for Fraser.
Reverse
In the reverse design of the 2008-W Proof Buffalo Gold Coins, James Earle Fraser’s artistic brilliance shines through his depiction of the awe-inspiring American bison. Inspired by the commanding presence of Black Diamond, this left-profile relief captures the buffalo in a moment of tranquil grazing, its head bowed down, surrounded by a mound of nourishing vegetation. The inscriptions on this face read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value, weight, and metal content of each coin.
History
The 2008 date mark in this series is the only one to feature fractional-ounce Gold Buffalos. These three fractional weights were struck in Proof and Burnished versions in 2008.
