{{/presale}}The 2008 release of the Proof American Eagle turned out to be a unique one, but not because the date mark of the coin was memorable or because the coin had an astronomical mintage. Instead, the 2008 Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is a memorable release because it was the last one issued before the series took a one-year hiatus. Today, you have the chance to purchase a 2008-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin online at Provident Metals in perfect condition.
Highlights:
Like the bullion version of the coin, the Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin had been struck every year since 1986 when the program debuted. This changed after 2008 as the US Mint was struggling to meet the skyrocketing demand for the bullion version of its coins. As the calendar ticked over to 2009 and demand did not slow, the mint was forced to suspend the Proof American Eagle Silver Coin and the Burnished American Eagle Silver coin so that all available silver blanks could be redirected to the bullion series.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2008-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin, you will find the historic image of Walking Liberty. This beautiful design shows Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon. Her right hand reaches out for the sunshine of a new day as her left hand holds branches of oak and laurel. The American flag is draped over her shoulders and blows in the breeze as she walks.
Reverse
The reverse of 2008-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins has a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. First issued in 1792, this design has been modified at times to reflect progress. The modern depiction shown here comes from John Mercanti and was created in 1986 for use on the American Eagle Silver Coins. It shows the bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. Above its head, 13 stars are arranged in a tight, triangular cluster to reflect the original colonies.
History
Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver coins were suspended only for 2009 following this 2008 release. Pent up demand for the coin in 2010 pushed the mintage from 700,979 in 2008 to 849,861 coins upon its return in 2010.
