In 2008, the United States Mint issued fractional-ounce coins in the American Buffalo Series for the only time. The 2008 issue year featured the same fractional-ounce coins from the American Eagle Gold Series: 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. The fractional-ounce coins were also released in a one-time Burnished American Buffalo Gold Coin available only in 2008.
Obverse
A stoic indigenous figure is found in right-profile relief on the obverse of the 2008-W Proof American Buffalo 1/2 oz Gold Coin. The figure was designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser and comes with inscriptions in the design field of Liberty, 2008, the F initial for designer James Earle Fraser, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Reverse
The American bison consists of two subspecies with the plains bison featured on the reverse side of 2008-W Proof American Buffalo Gold Coins. The left-profile bust of the bison shows the massive creature atop a mound of dirt. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, $25, and 1/2 oz .9999 Fine Gold.
History
Sales of the Proof American Buffalo Gold Coins in 2008 were very strong. The 1/2 oz coin had the lowest mintage at 12,169 coins, with the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins selling 13,125 and 18,884 coins respectively. The 1/10 oz gold coin outsold the 1 oz coin and its 18,863 coins sold.

Varied labels are possible in this listing, though not guaranteed. Provident Metals selects all coins at random after your payment has been processed. We are not able to guarantee which grading house issued the PF70 grade or any additional labels. If you buy more than one, please keep in mind you could get matching labels.
