{{/presale}}For just three years after the initial release, the Burnished American Eagle Gold Coin series included the three fractional-ounce coins that are offered to investors in the bullion series and collectors in the proof series. However, intense demand for the other versions of the coin led to the end of the fractional-ounce coins in 2009, making the 2008 release the last with fractional-ounce coins. Provident Metals now offers the 2008-W Burnished American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin for purchase online.
Highlights:
The United States Mint offered the Burnished American Eagle Gold Coin in the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights in 2006, 2007, and 2008. In this short time of availability, the fractional-ounce coins were actually quite popular. The 1/10 oz coin outsold all others, including the 1 oz coin, in 2007. The 1/10 oz and 1/2 oz coins outsold the 1 oz coin again in 2008. The 1/4 oz coin was also popular at first, but its mintage of 8,883 in 2008 was the lowest among all fractional-ounce coins in that three-year period and lowest in 2008.
Obverse
The obverse side of 2008-W Burnished American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins depicts Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. The design originally featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933. Liberty is shown in front-facing relief as she walks away from Washington D.C. Her figure is framed by rays of sunshine behind and the US Capitol Building is visible at her feet in the background. As she holds a torch out in her right hand and carries an olive branch in her left, a ring of 50 stars stretches around the design field to represent each state in the Union.
Reverse
On the reverse face, 2008-W Burnished American Eagle Gold Coins feature the design from Miley Busiek of American bald eagles. In this design, a female eagle guards over a young hatchling in the nest as a male eagle flies overhead with its wings spread so wide it seems to encompass the entire nest.
History
Burnished American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins, and the other two fractional-ounce coins, were initially suspended in 2009 and 2010 as the US Mint redirected all available gold bullion blanks to the production of the BU version of the coin. However, the continued demand for those coins and the low interest in the fractional-ounce burnished coins resulted in the series continuing from 2011 with only 1 oz gold.
