Obverse
An indigenous tribal figure is depicted in right-profile relief on the obverse of the 2008-W Burnished American Buffalo 1/2 oz Gold Coin. The design was created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser, who later said that he used the portraits of three actual tribal leaders of the day to create a portrait of a stoic indigenous figure found on these coins. The design is accompanied by inscriptions of Liberty, 2008, Frasers F initial, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
Reverse
An American bison is featured in the reverse design of the 2008-W Burnished American Buffalo 1/2 oz Gold Coins. The bison shown here is one of the two subspecies of bison living on the North American continent. The plains bison, this beast has a shallower, rounded hump compared to the larger, square hump of the wood bison. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, $25, and 1/2 oz .9999 Fine Gold.
History
The Burnished American Buffalo Gold Coin was issued only in 2008 and featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz options. Burnished gold blanks are first rolled in a drum with a burnishing medium that creates the matte surface upon which the design is then struck by the US Mint. Burnished coins have a design element that is struck just once with the blank.
