Obverse
The indigenous Tribal Leader profile that adorns the obverse of the 2006-W Proof American Buffalo Gold coin was designed by James Earle Fraser and first appeared in 1913 on the Indian Head nickel. Fraser had been allowed to sketch the chiefs of several different American Indian tribes. This particular profile is believed to be a composite of his sketches of Chief Big Tree of the Kiowa, Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Inscriptions included are LIBERTY and 2006.
Reverse
The massive American Buffalo that adorns the reverse of the 2006-W Proof American Buffalo Gold coin was also designed by James Earle Fraser and appeared on the Indian Head nickel. Standing atop a dirt mound, this majestic buffalo is believed to have been inspired by Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo. Inscriptions included are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and $50.
History
The creation of the American Buffalo Gold coin program was stipulated by Title II of Public Law 109-145, more commonly known as the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. It specified the minting of a $50 gold coin, weighing 1 ounce, containing 99.99% pure gold. It should be offered in both bullion and proof versions and produced using only gold mined from US resources. And for at least the first year, the obverse and reverse should feature the original James Earle Fraser designs from the Indian Head nickel.
