Being the 20th anniversary of the release of the American Eagle Gold coins, the US Mint offered a couple of special sets for collectors. There was the 20th Anniversary Gold Eagle Set, which was a 3 coin set that was limited to 10,000 units and promptly sold out. And there was the 20th Anniversary Gold and Silver Eagle Set, which was a 2 coin set that was limited to 20,000 units and sold out within a few months. The coins in these sets were various 1 oz. Gold Eagle or Silver Eagle coins. The US Mint still offered the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz American Eagle Gold coins in 2006, although the mintage of each of these coins was down from the previous year. In 2005, the US Mint produced 80,023 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold coins, dropping to 66,005 coins in 2006. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2006 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold coin available for purchase.

The price of gold began twelve consecutive years of steady increases in 2001. In the early couple of years, the price of gold surpassed the $300 per ounce mark, the $400 per ounce mark, and the $500 per ounce mark. In 2006, the price of gold surpassed the $700 per ounce mark, a feat that had not occurred since 1980. After starting 2006 at $530.00 per ounce, it finished the year at $632.00 per ounce, an increase of more than 23% over 2005.

Obverse

The obverse of the American Eagle Gold coin features the full-length figure Lady Liberty creation of Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She appears to be walking right off the coin. Her outstretched right hand is holding a torch and her left hand is carrying an olive branch. Her hair is flowing in the breeze. Near the bottom edge of the coin, to the left of her right foot, is a small depiction of the Capitol building. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2006.

Reverse

The reverse of the American Eagle Gold coin features the eagle family design created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. A male eagle, with an olive branch in its claws, is flying towards a nest occupied by an eagle family. It is said that this design illustrates the unity and family tradition of America. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

The American Gold Eagle coins are made of a durable composition of 22 karat gold. They are comprised of 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, which authorized the Gold American Eagle coins, requires that the coins are produced from gold mined in the US. The Act also stipulates that any profit from the sale of these coins be applied towards reducing the national debt.
