{{/presale}}As a result of the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the US Mint introduced the American Buffalo Gold coin series in 2006. These are the first .9999 pure gold coins produced by the US Mint. They are an addition to, and not a replacement of, the 22-karat gold American Eagle Gold coin series. The American Buffalo Gold coins weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the US government, making them investment-grade coins. They are offered in both Bullion and Proof versions and are struck at the West Point Mint. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2006 1 oz American Buffalo Gold coin available for purchase.
Highlights:
Each 2006 American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coin will arrive in a protective plastic flip, ensuring your gold coin arrives safely. These coins are the first in the overall series.
Obverse
The obverse of the Buffalo Gold coin features the design created by James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. This nickel was in circulation from 1913 to 1938, and it was a long-time collector favorite. The design is a profile of a Native American Chief. The Chief is actually believed to be a composite of 3 Chiefs: Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Chief John Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota. This specific image is known to collectors as Frasers 1913, Type I design. Its use honors the legacy of our lands first inhabitants. Inscriptions on the obverse are LIBERTY and 2006.
Reverse
The reverse of the Buffalo Gold coin also features the design created by James Earle Fraser for the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. The design is a profile of an American Buffalo. It is believed that Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo = the largest American buffalo held in captivity at the time – was the inspiration for this buffalo. It was intended to remind us of the pioneering spirit of our expansion into the nations west. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD, and $50.
History
The American Buffalo Gold is the first and only coin produced by the US Mint composed of one ounce of .9999 pure gold. Production of these coins was authorized under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, Title II of the Act. This part declared the striking and issuing of $50 American Buffalo Gold coins in both Bullion and Proof condition. It also declared that the obverse and reserve designs of the Buffalo Gold coins be the James Earle Fraser obverse and reverse designs from the Indian Head or Buffalo Nickel. These 24-karat gold coin offerings from the US were intended to compete with the 24-karat gold coin offerings from other countries, such as Canada and China. While the Buffalo Gold coins are struck at the West Point Mint, the bullion coins do not have a mint mark.
