{{/presale}}The American Eagle Gold coins in these 4-Coin Proof sets are struck in 22-karat gold. Being Proof coins, their beauty and glamorous shine are preserved by encasing them in protective capsules, and include a Certificate of Authenticity. The capsules in these sets are nestled in a mint-issued display box. Provident Metals presently has the 2005-W 4-Coin Proof American Eagle Gold Set available for purchase.
Highlights:
The American Eagle Gold coins are struck in 91.67% gold, 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The various weights in the set have denominations of $5, $10, $25, and $50. It is only the Proof American Eagle Gold coins that are available in these sets. Struck at the West Point Mint, the obverse of each coin has a W mint mark.
Obverse
Adorning the obverse of each of the 2005-W American Eagle Gold coins in this set is Lady Liberty. This design, created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt, depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty. With her hair flowing behind her, she is walking towards you, holding a torch in her extended right arm and an olive branch in her left. Inscriptions included are LIBERTY and 2005.
Reverse
Adorning the reverse of each of the 2005-W American Eagle Gold coins in this set is a Bald Eagle. Created by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter, the male eagle, with an olive branch in its talons, is flying towards a nest where its family awaits. Inscriptions included are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and IN GOD WE TRUST. Each coin also includes its weight and denomination.
History
There is one each of the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights in the 4-coin set of 2005-W Proof American Eagle Gold coins. The US Mint struck only the 1 oz weight in 1986. The next year, the Mint additionally struck the 1/2 oz weight, and beginning in 1988, the Mint was striking all four weights each year. The Mint issues these Proof sets annually with the exception of 2009. Increased worldwide demand for precious metals in the late 2000s resulted in the Mint having to honor its obligation to produce bullion coins, therefore, no Proof coins were available.
