Obverse

Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty is pictured on the obverse of all 2005-W Proof 1 oz Silver Eagles. This image is believed to be inspired by La Semeuse, a French coin designed by Louis Oscar Roty. The image seen on the obverse features Liberty striding into the sunset draped in the American flag with oaken branches in her left arm. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2005.

Reverse

2005-W Proof American Silver Eagles feature the heraldic eagle design on the reverse. This specific design was created by John Mercanti after he modernized it by adding the 13 five-point stars about the eagles head. Inscriptions on this field include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ, FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR.

History

The NGC was founded in 1987 as a third-party coin grading service. In 1949, Dr. William Herbert Sheldon invented a scale for grading coins which consisted of good, fine, and uncirculated. This led to the Sheldon Scale being divided into three new categories. Circulated (1-45), About Uncirculated (50-59), and Uncirculated (60-70). The most common forms of proof to see are PF70 and PF69.
