Initially offered only as a 1 oz coin, the series later added fractional sizes in 1987 and 1988. Apart from a one-year break in 2009, the series has been issued every year since its debut. Provident Metals now has the 2004-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin available.

The 2004-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin is packaged by the United States Mint with a presentation box, a matching themed shipper, and a Certificate of Authenticity. Each coin is sealed in a protective capsule. These proof coins are made from 22-karat gold, which includes 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. They feature a frosted finish on the design elements, contrasting with the mirror-like background.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2004-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin features the famous image of Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Liberty is shown walking confidently forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch, with rays of sunlight and the Capitol in the background. The design was originally used on the historic $20 Double Eagle coin. Inscriptions read LIBERTY and 2004.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2004-W Proof Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins, youll find Miley Busieks design of a family of bald eagles. A male eagle flies above the nest, while the female tends to their young below. This design emphasizes the importance of unity and family values. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.
History
During the early 2000s, overall production numbers for Proof Gold Eagles declined compared to the final years of the 1990s. For the 1 oz coin, mintages remained under 30,000 each year between 2000 and 2004, including the 2004 release, which came in at 28,215.
