{{/presale}}The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf series, a top choice for gold investors, began in 1979 with only a 1 oz coin. The 1/2 oz version was later introduced in 1986. Provident Metals now offers the 2004 Canadian Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coins.
Highlights:
In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint debuted the Gold Maple Leaf series with only the 1 oz coin, featuring .999 purity. By 1982, they had introduced fractional-ounce coins with .9999 purity, including the 1/2 oz coin that has been part of the series since 1986.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2004 Maple Leaf 1/2 oz Gold Coin features Queen Elizabeth II, in a portrait by Susanna Blunt, first introduced in 2004. This right-profile relief is the fourth and final effigy of the Queen, and the second Canadian artist-designed portrait of a monarch on Canadian coins. Inscriptions on this side include ELIZABETH II, 20 DOLLARS, and 2004.
Reverse
The reverse design of 2004 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins remains Walter Ott’s original depiction of the sugar maple leaf from 1979, showing a natural view of Canada’s national symbol. Inscriptions here read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/2 OZ OR PUR.
History
The sugar maple leaf on the reverse is a longstanding symbol of Canada, adopted as the national emblem in 1965. The maple leaf features prominently in Canadian sports, most notably as the logo of the Toronto Maple Leafs NHL team and on the uniforms of Canadian Olympic athletes.
