Highlights:
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins are typically struck to meet demand in years when the BU version of the coin is not experiencing surging demand. In 2003, the mintage of 747,831 coins was 100,000 more than the 2002 release and marked the ninth date mark in the 10-year period of 1997-2006 that saw year-over-year gains in mintage.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2003-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coins is Walking Liberty. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, this depiction shows Liberty walking in left-profile relief toward the sun on the horizon as she extends her right hand and carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left. The American flag is draped around her figure. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2003.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2003 Proof American Eagle Silver Coins comes with the heraldic eagle of the United States. This image features a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and an olive branch of peace in the other. There is a triangular cluster of 13 stars over its head and a banner in its beak that bears an inscription of E Pluribus Unum. Other inscriptions read United States of America, 1 oz. Fine Silver – One Dollar, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.
History
Only two date marks in the Proof American Eagle Silver Series have managed to surpass 1 million coins. The debut in 1986 generated sales of 1.46 million, while the 20th-anniversary release in 2006 generated sales of 1.09 million. The 2003 release of the Proof American Eagle was 100,000 coins higher than 2002, the only downward trending date mark between 1997 and 2006, and was slightly ahead of the 2001 release.
Ordering
