In this design, Liberty is shown in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer. This is symbolic of her guidance for the nation as she walks forward with a torch in her right hand to light the way and an olive branch in her left to symbolize peace.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2002-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coins is the image of a family of American bald eagles. Created exclusively for this collection by Miley Busiek, this design element includes a large family nest in which you will find a female eagle and a young hatchling. A male eagle is shown flying above the nest with an olive branch in its talons.
History
Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coins were introduced in 1988 along with the 1/10 oz gold coins. This came two years after the 1 oz coin debuted and one year after the 1/2 oz coin debuted. Each of these coins is available with a W mint mark on the obverse field denoting it was produced by the West Point Mint.
