{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The American Platinum Eagle was first introduced by the United States Mint in 1997. At launch, both the bullion and proof versions of the coin featured the same design on the front and back. Beginning in 1998, the Mint shifted its approach for the proof coins, releasing new reverse designs annually through 2016. Several of these reverse artworks were grouped into themed mini-series. The first of these was called the Vistas of Liberty. Provident Metals now has 2002 Proof American Platinum Eagle 4-Coin Sets available for purchase.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each 2002 Proof American Platinum Eagle 4-Coin Set includes one of each size: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. These proof coins are packaged in individual plastic capsules and housed together in a US Mint presentation box. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included with the set. As proof issues, these coins display frosted images against mirror-like fields.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2002 coins is the face of the Statue of Liberty, an image created by John Mercanti. This design first appeared in 1997 and remained in use on all Proof Platinum Eagles through 2017. It also continues to feature on the obverse of all bullion versions of the Platinum Eagle. The inscriptions here read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 2002.
Reverse
The reverse side of each 2002 coin in the set depicts a bald eagle swooping down toward a lake to catch a trout leaping from the water. The natural setting includes snow-capped mountains, representing the Northwestern United States, and closes out the Vistas of Liberty series. Inscriptions here read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, and the individual weight and face value of each coin.
History
Between 1998 and 2002, the United States Mint issued the Vistas of Liberty series on its Proof Platinum Eagles. This five-year collection showed bald eagles flying over different American landscapes. Artists Thomas D. Rogers and Al Maletsky contributed to the series, with Rogers creating the 1998 and 2001 designs, and Maletsky handling the artwork for 1999, 2000, and 2002.
