Coin Highlights:
History
Launched in 1986, the American Eagle Gold Coin went on to be one of the highest-selling programs ever introduced to a global audience. But it doesnt end there. This unique American coinage is more than just a record-breaker. It embodies the American spirit completely with its symbolic images found on both the obverse and reverse of the coin, highlighting our unity and spirit as a great nation of the world. Although gold has seen many rises and falls in demand and value, in 2002, this coin experienced a pick in interest amidst a strong performance for the price of gold for the year. The price of gold broke definitively above the $300 level, beginning the year at $278 per ounce and closing at $347.20. This was the highest price for spot gold seen since 1997. A steady march upwards would continue for many years.
Obverse
Featured on the obverse of the coin is the iconic design of Lady Liberty which was designed by influential engraver and French American sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. When you purchase the 2002 American Eagle Gold Coin, you will be treated to a full-length view of Lady Liberty in a flowing dress with a flaming torch in one hand and a large, olive branch in the other. This design was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt.
Reverse
the reverse side of the 2002 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin features Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of bald eagles. The design shows a male eagle soaring over the next as a female eagle guards the hatchlings within the nest.
