As the Library of Congress celebrates its 200th year in 2000, it remains the oldest institution in America, comprising three magnificent buildings in Washington DC. The esteemed position of Librarian of Congress, held by only 14 individuals, is currently held by Carla Hayden, the first woman and African American to assume this prestigious role.
