{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Between 1991 and 2009, the Perth Mint expanded its Australian Gold Kangaroo Series to include larger gold coin options. The series began in 1986 with 1 oz and fractional sizes, and in 1991, it introduced the 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo coins. The 2 oz and 10 oz sizes were eventually retired in 2009. Provident Metals now offers the 2000 Australian Kangaroo 10 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
The 2000 Australian Kangaroo 10 oz Gold Coin comes in a protective plastic flip. Although this coin had no set mintage limit, only 260 were ultimately issued. This places the 2000 release among the lowest mintage years of the 10 oz Gold Kangaroo series, with just three other years having fewer coins sold.
Obverse
On the obverse side, the 2000 Australian Kangaroo Gold Coin showcases Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. She is depicted wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The portrait was created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998 and was used on Australian coinage through 2018. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1000 DOLLARS.
Reverse
The reverse of 2000 Kangaroo 10 oz Gold Coins shows the red kangaroo, which is the largest marsupial in Australia. Adult males of this species (Osphranter rufus) can stand over 6 feet tall and weigh more than 200 pounds. Their long tails, powerful legs, and reddish-brown coats make them one of Australias most easily recognized animals. The inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN NUGGET, 10 OZ., 9999 GOLD, and 2000.
History
The reverse of the 2000 Gold Kangaroo features an image of a red kangaroo based on a classic Australian coin design. This leaping kangaroo was first introduced in the early 1900s on copper pennies and became one of the country’s most iconic coin visuals. The design was created by George Kruger Gray, a well-known British artist, and appeared on Australian pennies from 1938 to 1964.
