Obverse
On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins is a left-profile portrait of Liberty. This was designed by James B. Longacre prior to the first issue of the Double Eagle Gold Coin and was also used on the obverse of the Gold Eagle, or the $10 (USD) gold coin of the era. Liberty wears a coronet crown on her head with a circle of 13 stars around her head and a date mark below. This image featured on the obverse of the coins from 1850 to 1907 when it was replaced by Augustus Saint-Gaudens Liberty design.
Reverse
The reverse side of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins comes with an image of the Great Seal of the United States of America. This seal is accompanied by inscriptions of United States of America and the face value. In this series, the face value of the coins was inscribed as Twenty D from 1850 to 1866 and as Twenty Dollars from 1867 to 1907.
History
Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins were only available from 1850 to 1933, while other denominations were introduced as early as 1796 by the United States Mint. All US Eagle gold coin denominations were halted in 1933 and collected by the Treasury Department to melt into bullion bars during the Great Depression.
