Obverse
On the obverse side of $2 World War II United States Navy Legal Tender Notes there is a portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Beside this portrait on the left, there is a watermark of the US Navy emblem. Opposite this is a replication of the famous LIFE magazine photograph known as V-J Day in Times Square.
Reverse
The reverse of $2 World War II Vintage United States Navy Legal Tender Notes contains an image of the Declaration of Independence painting. This replication perfectly captures the original design by American artist John Trumbull, who completed the work in 1818. In it, we see Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and others presenting a draft of the Declaration to John Hancock.
History
The subjects in the iconic photo featured on these notes are believed by many to be Greta Zimmer and George Mendonsa. Mendonsa was in the midst of celebrating the WWII victory when he saw a Zimmer, a dental assistant whom he believed to be a nurse. He claims the ensuing embrace was inspired by his awe of the nurses who assisted wounded soldiers following Japans attack on the USS Bunker Hill. Today, the photograph is seen as an essential piece of American culture.
