{{/presale}}The 2 oz Silver Getz Washington round pays tribute to one of America’s earliest prototype coins. In 1791, head of the Senate coinage committee Robert Morris drafted legislation that would provide for the establishment of a federal mint. Morris hired Peter Getz and other engravers to make sample coins in anticipation of the new mint. In 1792, Getz made 30-40 silver Washington prototypes to be distributed to the 26 senators, and 100-150 copper versions to be distributed to 66 congressmen and other dignitaries. Getz struck the pieces in the coach house of John Harper, a metallurgical expert and fellow Philadelphia resident. The equipment he used was later moved to the first US Mint location in Philadelphia.
Today, the Intaglio Mint 2 oz Silver Getz Washington round celebrates the original 1792 pre-US Mint prototype. This Silver Getz Washington round is intricately sculpted in high relief from 2 oz .999 pure silver. Each round is a substantial 6 mm thick with a beautiful reeded edge. Add one of these exquisite and historic rounds to your collection today!
The obverse features the left-profile bust of George Washington in military attire, akin to the obverse of the original Getz Washington prototype. “G. WASHINGTON. PRESIDENT. I.” and “1792” is inscribed around the image within a circle of 18th-Century-style dentils.
The reverse is also reminiscent of the original Getz Washington round, featuring the raised wing American Eagle clutching an olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. 15 stars rise above its head and the outer rim encircled with dentils. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the round’s weight, purity, and metal content is inscribed around the image.
