{{/presale}}The 2 oz Silver Pan-Pac Octagonal pays tribute to the original $50 gold coin struck by the US Mint in 1915. The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition was a world’s fair held in San Francisco, California to celebrate the recent completion of the Panama Canal and the city’s recovery from the devastating 1906 earthquake. In commemoration of this event, the San Francisco branch of the United States Mint struck a variety of coins, including a $50 gold round and a $50 gold octagonal. With the exception of modern bullion coins, these two gold pieces are the highest denomination ever issued by the Mint, and the octagonal $50 piece is the only U.S. coin to be issued that is not round.
The Intaglio Mint 2 oz Silver Pan-Pac Octagonal round is intricately sculpted in a high relief format from 2 oz .999 pure silver. Each round is a substantial 6 mm thick with a beautiful reeded edge. Add one of these exquisite and historic rounds to your collection today!
The obverse features the left profile of the Roman goddess Minerva. The goddess of wisdom and skill is depicted holding a shield and wearing a crested helmet. The year 1915 is depicted in Roman numerals along the top of her shield. “In God we Trust” is inscribed above Minerva’s head. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, and “TWO TROY OUNCES” is inscribed in a border around the image. An outer border of dolphins is seen along the edge, representing the uninterrupted water route made possible by the Panama Canal.
The reverse features an owl, the bird sacred to Minerva and a symbol of wisdom. It is perched on a pinecone-filled branch of a Ponderosa Pine. “PANAMA PACIFIC EXPOSITION” and “SAN FRANCISCO” is inscribed in a border around the image. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (out of many, one) is inscribed to the right of the owl, and “.999 FINE AG” is inscribed below. The “S” mintmark can be seen to the right of the branch. The same dolphin border can be seen along the outer edge.
