{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The Aztec Sun Stone is one of the most familiar and meaningful symbols from ancient history. Its use on precious metal rounds continues to draw interest from collectors who appreciate historical artwork, cultural depth, and the story of Mesoamerican civilizations. These rounds, available in silver, gold, and copper, offer a detailed version of the original carved stone. Each piece provides both precious metal value and a link to one of the most important cultures of the ancient Americas. Today, 2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Rounds from SilverTowne are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Round is packaged in a protective flip. This 2 oz option is one of the larger sizes in the series. The collection also includes additional silver rounds, along with a copper version and silver bars, all showcasing the same Sun Stone design.
Obverse
The obverse of the Silver Aztec Calendar Round features the detailed design of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from basalt, the image combines artistic detail with cultural meaning. At the center is Tonatiuh, shown with a blade-like tongue. Surrounding him are four panels that represent earlier world ages. Around those panels is a ring displaying the twenty named days of the ritual calendar. The outer design includes decorative patterns, celestial symbols, and solar imagery, all bordered by two fire serpents.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Round is a profile image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc facing right. He became ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was the final tlatoani, as well as related to Moctezuma II. During the Spanish invasion led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led the defense of Tenochtitlan. Despite his efforts, the city was eventually overtaken. He was captured in 1521 and executed by the Spanish in 1525. Inscriptions here include TWO TROY OUNCES and 999 FINE SILVER.
History
Historians have long discussed the purpose of the Aztec Sun Stone. While many people once believed it functioned mainly as a calendar, modern research suggests it had a broader ceremonial role. It is now commonly understood as a monument tied to Aztec views of the universe, especially the belief in the fifth sun, which represents the current age. The design also reflects the relationship between the Aztec people and Tonatiuh, their sun god.
