Highlights:
Provident Metals is happy to offer the 2 oz Silver Antique Egyptian Gods Osiris Rounds to you for purchase today in near-perfect condition. The NGC issues a Mint State 69 certification to specimens that exhibit full, original mint luster and a maximum of just two minor detracting flaws. Acceptable flaws at this grading level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be located outside of the primary focal points of the round.
Obverse
On the obverse field of 2 oz Silver Antique Osiris Rounds is an image of Osiris. Murdered by his brother, Osiris is brought back to life by his wife, Isis, through partial mummification of his remains and a special ceremony. His resurrection is only temporary, but it becomes the basis of the mummification mythology in Ancient Egypt that dead pharaohs who are mummified will return to life in the afterlife, joining Osiris in the process. He is shown wearing the Atef crown with a crook and flail in his hands. The symbol found in the lower-right is the cartouche that represented Osiris in hieroglyphs.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2 oz Silver Antique Egyptian Gods Osiris Round includes a depiction of the mummified remains of Osiris. The ceremony Isis performed was only capable of reviving him for a short period of time, after which he died and passed on to the afterlife. The design element on this side includes not only the mummified remains of the god of fertility, but also a pyramid tomb in the background with clay pots at his feet.
History
The first evidence that Osiris was worshipped by Egyptians came in writings from the 25th century BCE. However, as he was associated with the Khenti-Amentiu, it is believed he may have been worshipped centuries earlier during the First Dynasty. The Khenti-Amentiu is a reference to the Foremost of Westerners, wherein the term westerners refers to the dead. This term came about during the First Dynasty and was often later applied to Osiris, giving rise to the belief he was worshipped as early as the 30th century BCE, or some 5,000 years ago.
