Goldbacks are privately issued notes that serve as a voluntary local currency made with a thin layer of 24-karat gold sealed between protective polyester sheets. Each note contains a small, measured amount of real gold and features detailed artwork, making Goldbacks one of the few modern currencies that incorporate precious metal directly into the note. The program first launched in Utah and has gradually expanded to additional states. Idaho is among the newer series in the program and introduces artwork that reflects elements of the states heritage. At this time, 2 Idaho Goldback Gold Notes are available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in plastic currency sleeves or bundles of 50 notes!
  • Distinctive design for the Idaho series!
  • Design inspired by the allegory known as Civitas!
  • Contains 1/500 troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The traditions of the Basque community in Idaho are captured in the design.
  • Please note that Goldbacks are NOT US legal tender.
  • UV enhancements and other advanced security features included.

Each 2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note includes a precise amount of 24-karat gold within the layered structure of the note. Individual notes arrive in plastic currency sleeves for protection. Bundles of 50 notes are packaged together with a black band and do not include sleeves. Goldbacks also incorporate modern security measures, including micro-printing, UV-reactive design elements, and unique serial numbers to help confirm authenticity.

Design

On the obverse of the 2 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, the artwork recognizes the cultural heritage of Idahos Basque community. The design features a dancer performing a traditional Basque hoop dance. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, Basque immigrants from the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France arrived in Idaho. Many initially came seeking work in the regions silver mining industry before moving into sheep herding across the states wide open landscapes.

History

The experience many Basque immigrants had as shepherds made them well-suited for the work available in Idahos high desert and mountain regions. Large numbers worked across the Snake River Plain and surrounding valleys, becoming an important part of the local ranching economy. Over time, strong Basque communities developed in Boise, which today remains home to one of the largest Basque populations in the United States.
