{{/presale}}Often cited by numismatists as one of the most beautiful American coins ever produced, the Double Eagle golden piece was one of the final artistic achievements of the great American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Persistently popular decades after its final issue in 1933, it eventually inspired Congress to establish an annual tribute in the form of the American Eagle Coin Program, which began issuing coins in the mid-Eighties that combined the designs of Saint-Gaudens with the work of modern medallic artists. The 1999-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin was one of these, struck at the West Point Mint and now available from Provident Metals.
Coin Highlights:
The 1999-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin carries a mint mark that identifies it as one of the post-1994 coins to be struck at West Point, and boasts a high-quality proof finish with original, unblemished luster. It ships fully insured by Provident Metals, secured in box packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Obverse
The obverse side features a faithful recreation of Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty. She has flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right hand, and is accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1999.”
Reverse
Featured on the reverse is a male bald eagle flying back to the nest grasping an olive branch, and his mate below protecting their hatchlings. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with a “W” mint mark.
History
Primarily known for his monumental sculptures, memorials, and Neoclassical public artworks, the famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens also had an extensive background in modeling cameos and relief portraits. It was because of these achievements that Theodore Roosevelt would seek him out to redesign America’s coinage, and even though he was ailing and nearing the end of his life when the commission came through, he nevertheless produced an all-time classic design in numismatics.
