Obverse

On the obverse of the 1999 Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins, youll see a portrait of Lady Liberty. This artwork shows the face of Liberty from the Statue of Liberty and was originally created in 1997 by John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, 1 OZ., $100, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse of each 1999 Proof Eagle Platinum Coin in this set depicts an American bald eagle soaring across a southern wetland, with an alligator resting below. This design was created by Al Maletsky for the US Mint and is one of four designs he produced between 1999 and 2003. The inscriptions read LIBERTY, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1999, and IN GOD WE TRUST.

History

Between 1998 and 2002, the United States Mint issued the Vistas of Liberty designs for the Proof Platinum Eagle coins. This series highlighted the bald eagle soaring above various American landscapes. The 1999 release focused on the swamplands of the American Southeast.
