In 1986, the American Gold Eagles inaugural year, the US Mint produced 3,600,856 Gold Eagle coins. However, in 1999, predominantly due to the uncertainty surrounding the approach of Y2K, the US Mint produced 5,082,609 Gold Eagle coins! In 1986, 726,031 1/4 oz Gold Eagles were produced. The next highest production year for 1/4 oz Gold Eagles is the 564,232 1/4 oz Gold Eagles produced in 1999. Currently, Provident Metals has the 1999 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.

  • Consists of 1/4 Troy oz of actual gold content.

The growing demand for gold, accompanied by the impending uncertainty of Y2K, created an increase in the production of American Eagles by the US Mint. This began to be noticeable in 1997, with an uptick in the numbers of coins produced across the denominations. This increase in production saw an even larger increase in 1998, ultimately culminating in the banner year of 1999 with the production of 5,082,609 American Eagle Gold coins. At this same time and for the same reasons, the price of gold found itself on a bit of a wild roller coaster ride in 1999. It began the year at $287 per ounce, however, it slowly fell to about $255 an ounce, where it stayed for several months. Then around the end of September, there was a quick spike of the price to $325 an ounce. The price of gold didnt remain that high for long, as it ended the year at around $290 per ounce.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1999 American Eagle Gold coin features the Lady Liberty design of the renowned artist and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The full-length figure of Lady Liberty is walking straight at you, her hair flowing behind her, a torch in one hand symbolizing wisdom, and an olive branch in the other hand symbolizing peace. It includes the inscriptions LIBERTY and 1999.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1999 American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold coin features a male eagle flying towards a nest where a female eagle and her eaglets await the males arrival. This design was created by Miley Busiek. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.

History

Many numismatists believe this particular obverse and reverse coin design to be the best coin design ever. The combination and contrast of the classic and modern design together has proven to be a winner through the years.
