{{/presale}}As part of the U.S. Mint’s long-standing tradition of proof coin set releases, the proof silver set has been especially popular with collectors seeking visually stunning coins that provide a worthy adornment to any collection. Particularly prized are a set of Premier five-coin silver proof sets that were issued in ornate velvet-lined display cases between the years 1992 and 1998: years in which these sets sported consistent packaging and featured three pieces struck in 90% silver. Changes to American coinage mean that the last year of this kind of Premier set was 1998, which sold nearly a quarter-million units on its initial releases as collectors recognized its historical importance. This 1998 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set is now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1998 US Mint Premier Proof Silver Set comes in its original presentation case, which years after its original issue may show signs of wear but whose constituent coins retain their excellent quality. Provident Metals fully insures each shipment against any chance of loss or damage.
Obverse & Reverse
Each set includes the Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel in their standard composition, and the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar struck in 90% silver. The coins’ obverse fields each feature their eponymous President and the year of issue. Their reverse fields feature unique designs whose elements include their face values and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
History
The history of the U.S. Mint proof coin set goes back many decades. The first American proof coins appeared in 1817, and sets of proof coins were being issued with numismatists specifically in mind starting in 1858, issued continually until the pressures of the Great War forced the Mint to cease producing them in 1916. Annually releases of these sets resumed in 1936 and continue to this day, with a variety of subsets forming mini-collections of their own. The Premier silver coin sets from 1992 through 1998 are often sought-after by collectors looking to assemble them as a unit, thanks to their consistent packaging and contents. After 1998, changes in American coinage would lead to larger coin sets with a different distribution of designs and with packaging designed to accommodate these new realities.
