The 1986 issue of the Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin remains the highest single-year issue of the coin. With 1.4 million coins sold, only the 20th-anniversary coin released in 2006 has come close to matching that mintage figure and demand. In fact, the 2006 coin is the only other issue in the series to have surpassed 1 million coins in a single year at 1.092 million coins sold. These 1998-P Proof American Eagles come had an overall mintage of just 450,000 coins sold, one of the lowest mintage years in the series.
Obverse
On the obverse side of 1998-P Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Walking Liberty. This vision of Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and originally featured on the US half dollar until 1947.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 1998-P Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins includes a modern version of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed in 1986 by John Mercanti, this is the latest depiction of the national seal and includes a triangular cluster of 13 stars above the head of the eagle. The eagle has the US national on its chest with the arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch of peace in the other.
History
The United States Mint issued the Proof American Eagle Silver Coins at the San Francisco Mint from 1986 to 1992. From 1993 to 2000, the Philadelphia Mint issued the coins with a P mint mark on the reverse. As of 2001, all Proof American Eagle Silver Coins are struck at the West Point Mint.
