Giant pandas live only in certain mountain regions of central China, mainly in Sichuan, with smaller populations in Shaanxi and Gansu. These bears prefer cool, misty forests at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet, where bamboo grows thick and provides year-round food. Since 1982, the panda has appeared on Chinas national bullion coin series. Now, 1998 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coins with Large Dates are available online from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Coins packaged in sealed protective plastic!
  • Large Date version from 1998!
  • Special 1998 Panda artwork!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .999 pure gold.
  • Face value of 100 Yuan issued by China.
  • Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests shown on the obverse.
  • Giant Panda with bamboo on the reverse.
  • Struck at the Shenyang Mint.

The 1998 Chinese Panda 1 oz Gold Coins come in sealed plastic pouches. These belong to the Large Date variety, named for the bigger numbers in the date stamp. In 1998, the Shenyang Mint produced the Large Date coins. The total mintage for both Large and Small Date versions in 1998 was 20,507 coins, though many were later melted during the late-1990s Asian financial crisis.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1998 Chinese Panda Gold Coin, youll see the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This round, multi-tiered structure has been on the series since 1982 and sits in the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. The view looks up from the main staircase, showing the full front of the building. The inscriptions include the nation of issue and 1998.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1998 Panda 1 oz Gold Coin highlights a Giant Panda sitting on a rock holding bamboo. This simple, calm scene ties the coin to the animals natural environment. Panda habitats often have steep slopes with thick bamboo under hardwood and conifer trees, offering both food and shelter. The inscriptions read 100 (Yuan) and .999 AU 1 OZ.

History

Giant pandas once lived across more parts of southern and eastern China. Today, development and habitat loss have limited them to isolated mountain regions. These smaller, separated populations face challenges since they cannot easily travel between habitats, reducing genetic diversity over time.
