Each 1998 Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coin is packaged in a plastic pouch. The giant panda, which lives in central Chinas bamboo-covered mountain ranges, is one of the countrys most recognized animals. Though classified as carnivores, pandas mainly eat bamboo and have developed specific traits to support their plant-based diet.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1998 Chinese Panda Gold Coin shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, located in the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing. This structure served as a ceremonial site where emperors prayed for plentiful harvests. The coin captures its detailed architecture, including the staircase and base.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1998 Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coin, a panda is seen lying comfortably on a rock, holding bamboo. Despite having digestive systems like carnivores, pandas spend much of their time eating bamboosometimes as much as 40 pounds a dayto meet their dietary needs.

History

This dependence on bamboo extends to their overall survival. Pandas often move through different elevations to follow the growth and life cycle of bamboo, which naturally dies off after flowering. Because of this, habitat changes can pose serious challenges for the species.
