The United States Mint began offering its platinum bullion coin in 1997. Called the American Platinum Eagle, it was the only coin in the American Eagle lineup to showcase modern artwork of Lady Liberty and the bald eagle instead of the traditional designs seen on earlier U.S. coins. Right now, Provident Metals has 1997 American Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coins available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic flip!
  • 1st year of issue for Platinum Eagles!
  • Declared mintage of 56,000 coins!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • The face value of $100 (USD) is fully backed by the US government.
  • On the obverse is Lady Libertys face from the Statue of Liberty.
  • The reverse features an American bald eagle gliding through the sky.
  • Designs by John Mercanti and Thomas D. Rogers.

Every 1997 American Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coin from this listing comes inside a protective plastic flip. As the first release year in the series, the 1997 issue ranks third in mintage totals after the 1998 and 1999 releases.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1997 American Eagle Platinum Coins, youll see the Statue of Libertys face as designed by Mercanti. It stands apart from the gold, silver, and palladium Eagles, which rely on early 20th-century designs, making this the only modern Liberty design in the entire lineup. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 1997, IN GOD WE TRUST, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Reverse

The reverse artwork of 1997 Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coins, created by Thomas D. Rogers, shows a bald eagle in flight over the land with the sun coming up in the background. This image is noteworthy as it was the only reverse used for both the BU and Proof coins in 1997 and again in 2017. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, .9995 PLATINUM, 1 OZ., and $100.

History

The obverse design by John Mercanti takes inspiration from the Statue of Liberty. It shows a side profile of Liberty with flowing hair and a crown of stars, a symbol of the original thirteen colonies. This design first appeared in 1997 and has since remained a distinctive part of the Platinum Eagle series.
