The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Series offers a distinctive option from the Royal Canadian Mint. Unlike the gold and silver versions, its production has had a less consistent history. First released in 1988 alongside the Silver Maple Leaf, the coins were produced annually until 1999. The 2000s saw fewer releases, with several years passing without new coins. Today, 1996 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Platinum Coins are available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic flip!
  • 9th release of 1 oz Platinum Maple Leafs!
  • Final mintage of 62,273 coins!
  • Contains 1 troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Bears a face value of $50 (CAD) backed by the federal government of Canada.
  • The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • On the reverse is the sugar maple leaf.

Each 1996 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Platinum Coin ships in a protective plastic flip. Among the original production run from 1988 to 1999, the 1996 issue holds the record for the highest mintage, reaching 62,273 coins. That figure is over 22,000 more than the mintage recorded in 1992, the next highest year.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1996 Canadian Maple Leaf Platinum Coin is a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. She wears the George IV State Diadem and a simple necklace. This marks the third official Canadian coin portrait of the Queen and the first designed by Canadian artist Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS, and 1996.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1996 Maple Leaf 1 oz Platinum Coin shows the familiar sugar maple leaf. This design was originally created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the Gold Maple Leaf and has been used on all Maple Leaf bullion coins ever since, including silver, platinum, and palladium versions. Inscriptions read CANADA, 9995, FINE PLATINUM, and 1 OZ PLATINE PUR.

History

The reverse side carries the sugar maple leaf, a long-standing Canadian emblem. French colonists adopted the maple leaf as a regional symbol in the early 1700s, noting the sugar maples practical value for food and trade. Long before that, Indigenous groups used maple trees for their sap, creating a connection between native traditions and European settlement.
