{{/presale}}Collectors love the beautiful mirror-like surfaces, contrasted with the sharp details, resulting in the amazing eye appeal of the Proof coins. This is the third release of the Silver Proof Set, consisting of five coins, with the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar coins being struck in 90% silver. In 1994, the US Mint sold 636,009 sets of these popular Silver Proof Sets which were struck at the San Francisco Mint. Provident Metals is presently offering the 1994 US Mint Silver Proof Set for purchase online.
Highlights:
The Silver Proof Sets distinctive black packaging makes it easily distinguished from the US Mints other Proof Set offerings. Each coin is located in its own individual space in the black cardboard. The cardboard is then placed inside the plastic lens that has the word Silver printed on it. The lens is then placed into a black outer box, with a silver edge, and the words United States Mint Silver Proof Set 1994 are printed in silver text.
Designs
The Silver Proof Set contains 5 coins – the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar. The Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel are the copper-nickel clad versions of the coins available in all Proof Sets. The Silver Proof Set is different because the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar included are struck in 90% silver. Purchasing one of these Silver Proof Sets is the only way for collectors to obtain the 90% silver versions of these coins. The silver content of these 3 coins in the set led to its original price of $21.00.
History
The US Mint began offering Proof Sets to collectors in 1936. However, initially, collectors had to purchase one of each coin in the same order in order to get a set. As demand grew for these Proof Sets, the Mint began creating different combinations of coins including commemorative proof coins to create various Proof Sets. In 1994, in addition to the Silver Proof Set, the US Mint offered the Silver Premier Set, which contains the same coins as the Silver Proof Set (copper-nickel clad versions of the Cent and Nickel, and 90% silver versions of the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar). The Silver Premier Set had an original price of $37.00 because it had more ornate packaging. Of course, there was the regular Proof Set, containing the copper-nickel clad versions of the Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar, with an original price of $12.50. The Mint also offered the Prestige Proof Set, containing the same coins as the Proof Set plus the 1994 World Cup Commemorative Half and Dollar coins, with an original price of $57.00.
