Highlights:
With your purchase of a 1991-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin in this listing, you will receive a coin that is in perfect condition. The NGC assigns a PF70 grade to coins that exhibit full, original mint luster and have no minor detracting flaws of any kind present on the designs or fields. The included UCAM designation stands for Ultra Cameo and refers to the presence of strong, frosted design elements and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1991-P Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is an image of Lady Liberty. Based on the 1907 design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the image features Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks away from Washington D.C. holding a torch up in her right hand and carrying an olive branch in her left hand. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, the P mint mark from the Philadelphia Mint, and MCMXCI. This was the last year in which the United States Mint used date marks in Roman numerals rather than Arabic numerals.
Reverse
The reverse face of 1991-P Proof American Eagle Gold Coins includes a depiction of a family of American bald eagles. The male eagle is flying toward the family nest with a branch in its talons as the female eagle shelters a young hatchling within the nest. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and 1/2 oz Fine Gold 25 Dollars.
History
The Proof American Eagle Gold Coins were introduced in phases from 1986 to 1988. The first one was the 1 oz coin issued in 1986, followed by these 1/2 oz gold coins in 1987, and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
