History
The United States Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle Coin series in 1987. But, it wasnt until 1988 that the Mint introduced the 1/10 oz weight denomination. Up until 1993, all fractional-ounce coins in the series were manufactured by the Philadelphia Mint. In 1994, the production of all weight denominations moved to the West Point Mint, where the one-ounce coins in this series were already being produced.
Obverse
The image of Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse of the 1990-P Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin. This design was taken from Augustus Saint-Gaudens original Double Eagle design. On this coins obverse, Lady Liberty is shown striding forward with magnificence, holding an olive branch in one hand and a torch in the other. Sun rays are shown extending out in the distance behind her to help highlight her radiance. This has been the featured obverse design since the series was first introduced.
Reverse
A family of eagles is shown on the reverse of the 1990-P Proof American Eagle 1/10 oz Gold Coin. This design was created by Miley Busiek. In the image, a female eagle sits waiting with her eaglets in the nest while a male eagle flies overhead carrying an olive branch. The weight, purity, and value of the coin are also shown on the reverse.
