Highlights:
With Canada under British rule, Canadian coins were produced in the UK Royal Mint. As Canada grew, pressure mounted for a mint in Canada. Thus the UK Royal Mint opened a branch in Ottawa in 1908. In 1931, under the Statute of Westminster, control of the Ottawa mint transitioned to the Canadian Government, and it was renamed the Royal Canadian Mint. In the 1980s, needing to boost production capacity, the Winnipeg production facility was opened.
Obverse
The 1990 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin obverse is adorned with the first year of the latest right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, depicting Her Majesty at 64 years of age. This new depiction details a mature Queen Elizabeth II wearing the royal diadem, a necklace, and earrings. Since Her Majesty has been featured on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since 1952, these depictions of Her Majesty have been periodically updated to accurately reflect her age. Inscriptions on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 1990.
Reverse
The 1990 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin reverse features a Maple Leaf. This timeless design, created by master engraver Walter Ott, beautifully captures the elegant details of the Maple Leaf and is featured on all Canadian Maple Leaf coins. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. Inscriptions on the reverse are CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.
History
The first Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold coin was produced in 99.9% pure gold. Four years later, the Royal Canadian Mint increased the gold purity of the Maple Leaf coins to 99.99%. This was the first bullion coin to be minted at such high purity. The RCM also decided to offer the Maple Leaf in additional weights. Along with the original 1 oz denomination, the 1990 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins are available in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. More weights were added later. Due to the high purity of its gold, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin is regarded as the standard for 24-karat gold bullion coins. It is legal tender and has its face value stated in Canadian Dollars.
