Highlights:
While the modern Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins are produced at the West Point Mint with a W mint mark, this has not always been the case. The West Point Mint has issued the coins since 2001. Prior to that, the Proof American Eagle Silver Coin was produced by the Philadelphia Mint with a P mint mark from 1993 to 2000, and at the San Francisco Mint from the launch of the program in 1986 to 1992. That includes these 1989 Proof American Eagle Silver Coins with the S mint mark.
Obverse
Walking Liberty has featured on the obverse of Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins since the series debuted in 1986. Originally used on the circulation half-dollar coin from 1916 to 1947, Walking Liberty was designed by Adolph A. Weinman and depicts Liberty marching toward the sun on the horizon in search of brighter days ahead.
Reverse
The national emblem of the United States of America features on the reverse of 1989-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. Known as the heraldic eagle of the United States, this symbol depicts the bald eagle with the national heraldic shield on its chest, arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other talon. A triangular cluster of 13 stars is situated above the head of the eagle.
History
Proof American Eagle Silver Coins are available only in 1 oz silver, just like the bullion version of the coin. The coins were produced from 1986 to 2008, halted in 2009, and restarted in 2010.
